a path ahead is the artist’s reflection on her interest in alternative chronologies of technologies. Thinking of her experience of being lead by a white horse that appeared out of the darkness to lead her and friends back to the village just to the south of Tibet, Yan paints a spliced instance of being magically lead to home.
Growing up in China and coming of age in the States, Yan witnessed firsthand the two countries’ divergent relationships with history and technology. The result is a belief in cosmotechnics -- technological systems varying according to different cosmologies, and an impulse to purge linear views of technologies.
